Module 2 is a 5-day (8am – 5pm) course. It is the second of two modules, the first being Fundamental Gemstone Setting Techniques, which are each separate 5-day courses.
In this course slightly more complex methods are used to secure gemstones. This needs to be done after the student has been familiarised with basic silversmithing skills, and has done the first module of the setting courses.
The work is done in sterling silver, and suitable semi-precious or synthetic gemstones are used in the exercises.
Although considerable time is spent manufacturing the settings in the second module, certain preprepared elements may be presented to the student in order to make it up into a jewellery piece.
The methods covered in this module are:
- Channel setting round stones
- Prong setting octagonal stone (into sheet metal setting)
- Baguette settings
- Optional extra (time permitting): setting tool preparation and maintenance
Please note: The images shown here merely serve as examples of jewellery pieces that have the type of setting discussed so that you, as a student, can identify what the aim is and are not necessarily the items which will be made on the course.
